This week, we proudly honour the incredible women who are the heartbeat of our league — the ones behind the scenes who keep everything moving.
From handling logistics and managing teams, to delivering physiotherapy on the field and making tough calls as referees — these women are essential to every aspect of the game.
We had the privilege of speaking with two exceptional women in rugby league, hearing about their journeys and the vital roles they play in our sport.

Meet Susan Komang — Executive Assistant, Operations (picture above)
Susan is the powerhouse behind many moving parts of the PNG Hunters. She runs the office, coordinates visas and passports, manages travel arrangements for visiting teams, and much more.
What drew you to work in rugby league?
“I’ve worked in the sports industry for over 9 years, but I never imagined being here when I was in school. In 2015, I joined Cricket PNG thinking it would be a temporary role — just something to gain experience until I found work in my field of study.
But everything changed when I became part of the team behind the team. Helping organize logistics and prepare teams to represent PNG — that’s when I realized I was part of something bigger. The energy, the teamwork, and the pride of seeing our athletes succeed… it pulled me in.
With my skill set and experience, I joined the PNG Hunters to contribute to a club that is truly loved by the nation.”
What part of your job brings you the most satisfaction?
“Watching a game on home soil, in a packed stadium, surrounded by fans, sponsors, dignitaries — even the Prime Minister — and knowing I helped make that happen.
That’s the most rewarding feeling.”
What’s the biggest misconception about what admin staff do?
“People think sports admin is easy — but it’s far from it.
It’s a demanding and complex role. We handle everything from business operations and logistics, to working with athletes, managing events, liaising with sponsors, balancing budgets, dealing with media and fans, and sometimes even resolving conflicts.
Every day brings new challenges — and we have to stay professional and adaptable through it all.”

Meet Gabby Mailau — Sports Physiotherapist (picture above)
Gabby is a passionate physiotherapist who recently travelled with Team PNG to the Mini Pacific Games in Palau. She also supports the PNG Hunters alongside Henriella Vilosi and worked with the SANTOS Orchids during their friendly against the ADF women’s team earlier this year.
What inspired you to become a sports physiotherapist?
“I’ve always been fascinated by how the body moves and recovers. I wanted to be part of that journey — helping people return to what they love doing.”
Can you share a proud moment in your career?
“Every day brings those moments.
Every athlete has their own story, challenges, and goals. I get to walk with them through recovery — from their first pain-free step, to improved movement, to the moment they realize how strong they really are.
Physiotherapy lets me blend science, problem-solving, and compassion — and I feel honoured to make a real difference in people’s lives.”
What strengths do women bring to high-performance environments?
“Women bring empathy, attention to detail, and an instinctive nurturing care. These qualities create a more balanced and holistic approach to athlete wellbeing — which ultimately enhances performance.”
These stories are just a glimpse into the powerful roles women play across every level of rugby league. Their expertise, passion, and dedication are integral to the success of our teams — and we’re proud to celebrate them.
